I don't personally agree with making community college free. I feel that anyone is capable of receiving an 80 average. If community college is going to be free i feel the requirements should be higher, such as an 85. Also if the household has enough funding to send their child to a state school then community college shouldn't be free because that would be taking away from someone else who really needs the education. If a person has an 85 average and does not have the funds for any other college then have that person go for free. Many people are going to abuse this even if they're capable of going to a better school. Eventually this money that is going towards making the college free is going to come back in some sort of way and we are going to have to pay it.
I also read an article explaining why making community college free isn't such a good idea. In the article it explains how making the college free will just put everyone into more debt than they already are. Also it explains how there are many very affordable online colleges.
Making community colleges free isn't necessarily a good idea nor is it a bad one. If community college ends up being free, the standards of getting in should be higher and there should be limitations.

I found your blog to be very interesting. Although I agree with you that some lazy kids would definitely take advantage of the system I still think that the advantages of free college greatly surpass the disadvantages. There are many kids in the U.S. that are at disadvantage due to there economic status. The lower class of America can not afford a higher education the fore they usually get stuck in the cycle of poverty. I believe free college would be a great way to brake the cycle and give hard working kids an opputnuty to reach there high set goals
ReplyDeleteI agree with the notion that free community college might sound better as an idea than it would work out in reality.
ReplyDeleteIt could potentially be a good thing; in some cases individuals previously with no hope for the possibility of higher education could now have the opportunity to go college without the burdening threat of endless student loans hanging over their heads.
However, I do believe that we need to look at the looming corruption of the system before it is set in place. Many people will use the free college simply because it is there; this will cause community college to be merely an extension of high school, which in turn would make the efforts to install it counterproductive. The requirements (for the jobs the said people in need of higher education hope to hope to acquire) will simply rise. The jobs in which you originally only needed a high school diploma could now instead require a college diploma. And with that, the more prestigious careers may no longer accept a diploma earned at a community college.
