Poverty at Home

We have been talking about how there is poverty everywhere, we just don't see it. In the video we watched this week about the single mom in Shirley, it was a bit surprising that something like that was happening so close to where we live. Where I work, it's less surprising however. Everyday I see people, mostly minorities, come in with three or four children and have to tell them they can't get a bag of candy because they don't have enough money on their food stamps card. Its heart breaking having to watch these mothers tell their child no because she needs money for the bus so she can get to work. But then there are the people who you wouldn't expect to be using food stamps. I'm talking about the women who have designer bags and nice, new clothes or the men with nice watches. These are the people who are trying to hide that they're struggling by trying to keep up with other peoples life style. A life style that they can't exactly afford.
The vicious cycle of poverty is everywhere. There are people who have worked their entire lives to provide for their family but still can't get out of the cycle. The cycle travels from generation to generation, maybe if they're lucky each generation will have a little bit more than the last.
