This sculpture was created by George Gray Barnard and became one of his best known works of art. George Gray Barnard was an American sculptor who grew up in Illinois. He moved to Paris for 12 years where his success in art had begun. This famous statue was originally named "Je sens deux hommes en moi" meaning, "I sense two men in myself". Now its referred to more frequently as The Struggle of the Two Natures in Man. It took Barnard six years to make this statue and the dramatic poses of the figures helps portray the life of man. I view this statue as inspirational because it depicts man's higher self rising above his lower self. Also there is a bat on the arm of the lower figure and It is said that the bat represents darkness in which man’s baser nature is mired.
