The success of art is dependent upon, content, subject matter, and composition, along with other factors that come along with the society judging them. The Third of May by Goya, gained popularity and interest quickly. This piece has numerous aspects that draw the attention and pathos of the viewer. The desperation in the Spanish mans face makes the viewer feel bad for him, putting the viewer in the "shoes" of the man. In this piece the opposing side is hardly shown, only their backs and violent acts towards the helpless and innocent.
In the second of May by Goya, even though it probably took much more time and intricate painting skills, it does not even compare to the 3rd of May. In this painting there is hardly any distinction between the sides in play. Goya's point of view is hard to tell considering both sides are being gruesome. In art it is not always how ttalented artist is but how they integrate their personal opinions and how they lay out their piece to accommodate their point of view. Shown by the popularity of the more personal 3rd of May by Goya
