Do the Ends Justify the Means #3

Hearing my fellow classmates' opinions on this topic really helped to piece together my scrambled thoughts, but this topic is still very subjective which makes forming an opinion difficult.

What are we gambling with here? How bad are the means? How good is the end? Is there any other possible way, is this our only option? These are the questions we need to ask.

You see if we are talking about something petty such as grades, then no, I don't believe the end justifies the means. If I desired to be valedictorian, then the only appropriate means of doing this is by studying hard for tests and diligently completing my homework, not by sabotaging my opponents/friends. But let's say we are talking about something much deeper, something such as the potential destruction of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The end has justified the means for us before, like World War II. Millions of people died, but it was worth putting an end to Hitler's tyrannical rule.

When it comes to the evil that is ISIS, does the end of replenishing some peace, not just to the middle east, to the world justify the means of potentially killing civilians and endangering the lives of our troops? Let's say we did, would there even be peace after? It is almost impossible to say and I don't think any human being could possibly make a decision, let alone the "right" one. A life is a life no matter what, but when the devil's lap dogs are bringing sheer terror to an innocent land, we must exacerbate every option possible to put an end to them. Stubborn as bulls, unwavering in their ways, sitting down over tea and talking this out will get us nowhere. I can not condone the accidental decimation of civilians who just want to live their lives. So what's next?

                                              I am stuck between crossroads.

I can not answer this question today and I don't think I'll ever be able to.
