Originally I wanted to share this pretty much based on the unbelievable absurdity of it. To an extent it came off as almost funny to be honest. That being said, the more thought I put into it,the more I realized how fundamentally disturbing it actually is. In one sense it's scary due to the more immediate threat; a terrorist organization blatantly aiming towards impressionable teenagers for support. The recruitment video was a clear example of this already. On top of this, ISIS is making use of social networking, with accounts popping up on every possible site for the same twisted reason. Pictured here is an ISIS post on Instagram, using the popular war game franchise as a jumping point to target already desensitized young men across the world.
What ended up being the most unsettling to me was the realization that this isn't uncommon. Actually, we see it daily. Teenagers are impressionable, which is really the natural order of things. But in the world that we live in today, it's all too easy for normal naïve teens to be turned into tools. Technology has given us the information age, which is undeniably incredible, but that same information is also easily corruptible. And that's not something that applies to exclusively teenagers. As a people, we've pretty much turned into ignorant hate mongers for whatever cause found a way to convince us. It's slightly more subtle here in our first world countries, but we're all still overly susceptible to propaganda regardless of the opportunities things like social networking open up. So who's to say ISIS's recruitment campaign won't be effective? Judging by ourselves alone, that's pretty much up in the air. It's worked before after all, regardless of absurdity
