A Perfect Day for a Banana Fish

The image above is a drawing someone created for the short story A Perfect Day for a Banana Fish by J.D Salinger. The image above is supposed to represent the scene where Muriel is talking on the phone with her mother. As you can see Muriel isn’t very intrigued into what her mother is saying to her; she is more fascinated her nails. She is pretty much ignoring whatever her mother is saying to her because she the type of girl who really doesn’t care what people tell her. For instance Muriel’s mother is trying to tell her to stay away from Seymour because he is a psycho and is afraid that he will hurt her. But Muriel being the woman she is doesn’t listen to her and just ignores this whole conversation she is having with her mother.

Now Seymour is Muriel’s husband and he is I guess you can say a children’s mind trapped in a human’s body. You see Seymour looks like an adult, but he really acts like a child. Seymour went into the military during WWII when he was only 18. So he was still pretty young and still like a kid. Seymour returns home and still acts like a kid because he wants his child-hood back. His childhood was pretty much taken away from him because of the war. But Seymour needs to realize that his childhood is over and it is now time to become an adult and needs to stop acting like a child, but that is very difficult for him.
